Al Sears Jazz Festival

 
The Al Sears Jazz Festival, founded in 2002 and produced by the City of Macomb, has grown to include the region’s top performing jazz artists as well as artist of international fame. Western Illinois University and the Jazz Studies Department have played a significant role in this great festival from its inception with performances by the WIU Steel Band, Jazz Studio Orchestra, and the WIU Hopper Faculty Jazztet.
 
Performing with the JSO on September 21, 2013 is Pharez Whitted is currently Director of Jazz Studies at Chicago State University. Whitted is a graduate of DePaw University and Indiana University and has performed with Wynton Marsalis and Branford Marsalis, George Duke, Slide Hampton, Elvin Jones, and many others. He will perform with the Jazz Studio Orchestra at 4:00 pm on the Al Sears Festival stage in Chandler Park. Pharez will give a masterclass/clinic for University participants at 2:00 p.m. on Friday September 20, 2013 in the COFAC Recital Hall.
